Moving Beyond Random Acts of AI
The early days of AI adoption were marked by experimentation. Businesses tested generative models, automated responses, and deployed standalone tools to gauge their potential. These initial attempts, often disconnected and lacking a strategic framework, led to mixed outcomes. This phase has been termed “random acts of AI.”
Today, organisations are shifting their approach. Rather than seeing AI as a set of isolated tools, forward-looking businesses are treating it as a structural layer across the enterprise. Agentic AI software entities capable of autonomous decision-making is now central to transforming how work is done, data is utilised, and value is created.
What is Agentic AI?
Agentic AI refers to systems that don't simply respond to prompts, but actively initiate tasks, navigate systems, and make decisions based on defined objectives. Unlike traditional AI solutions that perform one function, Agentic AI solutions operate with autonomy and context-awareness across workflows. These “digital teammates” can orchestrate people, data, and machines in real time, not as extensions of tools, but as co-workers.
This marks a radical departure from the model of building apps and APIs to perform tasks. Instead, AI is evolving into a runtime environment, akin to an operating system for the enterprise.
The Shift to Organisational AGI (OAGI)
A critical insight from the session was the importance of Organisational AGI (OAGI). Unlike general AI or AGI aimed at replicating human intelligence broadly, OAGI focuses on specific, repeatable intelligence required for business operations. It doesn’t need to compose poetry or drive a car. It only needs to automate key tasks in HR, finance, IT, customer service, and other areas with reliability and contextual accuracy.
The goal of OAGI is to turn fragmented, tacit knowledge within teams into structured, accessible intelligence models that can guide autonomous systems. This redefines how companies train their AI systems not by scripting tasks but by codifying institutional expertise.
Rethinking Adoption Strategy
Organisations now face a critical decision point. Many are accumulating point solutions with overlapping capabilities, without learning from previous deployments. Others are stuck between vendor promises and internal uncertainty. The recommendation is clear choose a path, but be intentional.
Leaders should stop viewing AI as a series of tools and start treating it as a capability to be developed over time, much like learning to play a musical instrument. Mastery requires time, focused effort, and a coherent environment a runtime where systems can learn, evolve and act.
Without this intentionality, organisations risk becoming overwhelmed when AI shifts from a passive assistant to an active participant in every process.
Architecture for the Agentic Future
To support this evolution, a new kind of digital architecture is required. Traditional systems rely on APIs and manual integrations. Agentic systems, however, require architectures that allow multiple agents to communicate, learn and collaborate. They also need simulation capabilities, enabling agents to test scenarios before acting critical for risk mitigation and trust.
This rethinking must happen at both infrastructure and organisational levels. It’s not only about installing new technology. It’s about redesigning processes and upskilling teams to support AI-led orchestration and decision-making.
Q&A
Question: What is Agentic AI?
Answer: Agentic AI refers to autonomous systems capable of making decisions, initiating actions and collaborating with other agents across business processes.
Question: How should companies begin integrating AI without creating fragmented solutions?
Answer: Start with an intentional strategy that prioritises interoperability and long-term scalability. Avoid isolated deployments and instead build a unified AI runtime environment.
Question: What is the difference between AGI and OAGI?
Answer: AGI aims to replicate human intelligence broadly. OAGI (Organisational AGI) focuses on automating repeatable tasks and workflows using domain-specific intelligence within businesses.
Question: Why are most AI deployments failing?
Answer: High failure rates stem from lack of alignment, poor data structures, unrealistic expectations, and the misuse of traditional deployment models for AI systems.
Question: What is an agentic runtime?
Answer: It is an environment where digital agents can be trained, deployed and orchestrated to perform business tasks autonomously, similar to how operating systems manage applications.
Question: How does simulation improve AI safety?
Answer: Simulation enables AI agents to test decisions before execution, reducing risk and increasing trust in automated systems.
Question: How can organisations avoid becoming reactive with AI adoption?
Answer: By synthesising lessons from past deployments, committing to a unified strategy, and investing in infrastructure that supports long-term AI readiness.
Question: How does AI improve employee experience in HR and finance?
Answer: AI reduces time spent on repetitive tasks, enabling employees to focus on strategic, high-value work. It also helps streamline processes like onboarding, benefits selection and reporting.
Question: What is the long-term value of AI beyond automation?
Answer: AI can act as a catalyst for process redesign, knowledge capture, and decision support unlocking insights and efficiencies previously inaccessible through traditional systems.
